As Spring 2009 arrives with the promise of change, people are embracing hope that the dark cold economic cloud of winter has passed. Shoppers are holding on tight to their wallets, yet still desire to make a “feel good” purchase. To do so while staying within their budget, items with lower price tags, particularly those under $20 seem to be moving the best. Whether it’s a new shade of lipstick, a shiny lip gloss, or a fashionable Peace Sign necklace; women and teens are reaching for something to make themselves feel good. Wholesale fashion jewelry sales are experiencing a sales boom, as retailers move quickly to include this hot category in their stores. Gone are the days of spending $250 plus on a new pair of designer jeans; or a $300 brand label hand bag. Here now are the days when every dollar must account for something, purchases must be versatile, have some “wow” factor and yet fit a rather tight and sometimes overstretched budgets.
Accessory sales are way up. From a new belt, bracelet or pair of earrings, shoppers are looking to accent their wardrobes. Add a dash of color and tie into the bright shades of Spring. Accessories must be able to accommodate several different outfits; such as a crystal peace sign necklace worn over a blouse in the office; that may also be worn with a lower neckline in the evening as well. Items reflecting their recession proof nature, such as reasonably priced cosmetics, e.g., Lip Gloss, are also doing quite well. MAC makeup reports their under $18 lipstick sales are doing extremely well. Other companies like JC Penny’s have also seen their value driven accessory sales grow.
